a night at QBH
March 17th 2008 03:39
The mood was feeling right for the night as we walked into the hallowed doors of QBH. Hearing the beats echoing up the staircase, we couldn’t wait to hit the dance floor to see the likes of Steve Bug, Sven Vath and Gui Boratto playing Melbourne. We arrived to find Mike Callander throwing down some heavy minimal tracks to get everyone up and grooving. With everyone soaking up the atmosphere and anticipating the next tune, it was Steve Bug’s turn to occupy the decks.
Without hesitation, he launched into some tough beats, ranging from the sound we recognize him for on the Poker Flat label to tracks on a heavier, more progressive tip. While it would have been nice to hear him play in a more intimate venue, Bug adapted his sound well for the cavernous QBH dancefloor. He certainly should have been encouraged, by the reaction his set received from the punters!
Sven Vath - undoubtedly the main attraction – carried on Bug’s vibe in style with a thrashing mix of tech and electro. Grooving through until approximately 4.30am, everybody was still hungry for more, eager to hear Sven’s next track. Perhaps his greatest achievement, however, was his successful navigation of a three hour set while wearing a t-shirt on his head. Let’s see Richie Hawtin replicate that!
Completing the trifecta was the Brazilian minimal maestro Gui Boratto. He played patiently, laying down a number of smoother, deeper tracks, segueing into more melodic progressive tunes as his set progressed. While they all suffered at the hands of QBH’s usual sound issues, Boratto seemed to suffer the most with the lack of clarity detracting from the subtle music he provided us with.
That aside, a very good night for all involved.
